Chicago Youth Storage Initiative comes to a celebratory close

On June 26, 2018 youth service providers, funders, City of Chicago officials, community stakeholders and young people gathered to celebrate the impact of the Chicago Youth Storage Initiative (CYSI).

2017 Updates on Youth Storage Initiative

2017 has been a big year for the Chicago Youth Storage Initiative. In addition to our current storage program partners - La Casa Norte, Unity Parenting and Counseling, Puerto Rican Cultural Center, Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, and Teen Living Programs - new locker programs were launched at the following facilities:

Milestones in Youth Storage

2016 has been a big year for the Chicago Youth Storage Initiative! The Initiative installed lockers in shelters all over the city, and also explored new storage options.

Locker programs were launched at the following facilities, for a total of 175 lockers now available for youth experiencing homelessness:

PFF at the Tiny Homes Summit

Lara Brooks, director Chicago Youth Storage Initiative, a PFF-backed project, was a moderator at the recent Tiny Homes Summit in Chicago. Lara facilitated a panel of youth homeless service providers, who discussed the realities of how young people might experience life in a tiny home community, and what the considerations should be for this population. As moderator, Lara led conversation on how the tiny homes movement fits in with other programs serving homeless youth - such at the Chicago Youth Storage Initiative.

CYSI Makes Name at National Conferences

The Chicago Youth Storage Initiative (CYSI) continues to make progress locally—and is becoming a voice nationally.

First Lockers Installed as Part of Youth Storage Initiative

The Ujima Village shelter on Chicago's South Side is the home to new lockers, where youth experiencing homelessness can safely and securely store their belongings. 

NPR Story Mentions Youth Storage Initiative

An ongoing NPR Illinois series, Illinois Issues: No Place to Call Home, recently examined youth homelessness in the state, and how the budget impasse is affecting critcal services for this population. The story makes note of the Chicago Youth Storage Initiative and the Pierce Family Foundation's involvement in the project.
